Originally built by Harod the Great in 10 BC, this city became the provincial capital of Roman Judea, Roman Syria Palaestina and Byzantine provinces. In 640 AD however, it was destroyed during the Muslim Conquest and lost its significance. The area was ruled by the Muslims until the Crusaders pushed back in and conquered the area in the 11th century. This city entrance was built by the Crusaders in such a way that strategically forced invaders to use their left hand when fighting around the corner entrance.
